About the Role
Our client is a WA State government organisation responsible for overseeing the operation of all public transport in Western Australia. They are currently seeking a Financial Accountant to come in and join their team in East Perth on a 3 month temp assignment with possible extensions.
Candidates for this position must have:
- A tertiary qualification in Finance or Commerce or equivalent with eligibility for membership to one of the professional bodies (ICAA, CPA Australia or IPA).
- Proven financial management experience in an accrual-based environment, including experience in the use of corporate Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and spreadsheets.
As the Financial Accountant you will undertake financial accounting and reporting duties to ensure compliance with Financial Management Act, Australian Accounting Standards and relevant legislation including providing contemporary advice and reporting.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Preparation and Reporting of Financial Statements: Manage the full cycle of financial accounting, including preparing end-of-year accounts, notes, and supporting documentation in compliance with Australian Accounting Standards and relevant legislation (FMA).
- Lease Accounting Management: Oversee all accounting and reporting activities related to leases, ensuring compliance with standards, maintaining lease information systems, and conducting forecasting of future lease liabilities.
- Monthly Financial Processing and Reconciliation: Execute regular monthly and quarterly finance tasks, including processing journals, performing balance sheet and payroll reconciliations, and assisting with monthly and quarterly financial reporting submissions.
- Policy, Compliance, and Taxation Oversight: Monitor and interpret changes in accounting standards and financial legislation (e.g., FMA, Treasurer's Instructions), assist in developing accounting policies, and support the preparation of annual tax returns (e.g., FBT).
- Financial Advice and Stakeholder Support: Provide timely accounting advice and recommendations to management (e.g., evaluating tenderers' financial status) and assist with research and drafting responses for audits, statutory bodies (e.g., ABS, ATO), and Ministerial correspondence.
About You
You will be an experienced Financial Accountant with proven experience and reliability in previous positions
The successful candidate will possess:
- Possession of a tertiary qualification in Finance or Commerce or equivalent with eligibility for membership to one of the professional bodies (ICAA, CPA Australia or IPA).
- Considerable knowledge and practical application of Taxation legislation as it applies to Government agencies, in particular FBT and GST.
- Proven financial management experience in an accrual-based environment, including experience in the use of corporate Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and spreadsheets.
- Demonstrated experience in interpreting Australian Accounting Standards and Treasurer’s Instruction and applying a range of financial management governance and legislative requirements.
- Strong verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders on a variety of accounting and finance matters, including taxation.
- High level of financial analysis, conceptual thinking and problem solving with attention to detail for complex financial management problems.
